The Calm Before The Calm

Posted in Books, General, News on January 20, 2012 by Michael Louis Calvillo

It’s been a rough week, Loyal Reader. I spent most of it queasy, clutching my ribs, mumbling, ick, ick, icky. I’m still a little shaky. Not a 100% just yet, but getting there…

I finally made it in to work today (sad to report I missed most of the week battling pain medication and going insane). Rolling out of bed this morning I still felt a bit kooky, but I screwed up my resolve, rolled with my wife (we work at the same school – killer, huh?) and then went to work siphoning as much youthful energy as possible.

(Ugh!)

The crazy kids in my classes are great at bolstering my spirits. They’re awesome well-wishers. This cancer fight is an unruly mix of individual strife (damn, how I ache!) and collective compassion. My students know all about what I’m going through and we talk about it openly. I talk their ears off about radiation and chemo and needles. We have fun with the horrid stuff and keep it positive. It’s super cathartic. Besides, after three days of sitting on the couch with Wendy Williams (big fan), and Anderson Cooper (big fan), and Jeremy Kyle (not so much), work is a breezy dream.

Thus begins the weekend. For the first time, in a long time, the missus and I don’t have anything planned on the calendar. I am sooo looking forward to just chilling with my girl, watching movies, reading, relaxing, and recouping.

Oh, and hey, check it out! The HWA has released the preliminary ballot for the Bram Stoker Awards (not the official ballot – that’s coming soon). 7BRAINS is a potential Long Fiction contender. There are some heavy hitters in the running and it’s gonna be tough to make the final cut, but it’s nice to be listed among so many great works. Follow the link – http://www.horror.org/blog/?p=2245 – seek out some titles, and go on a horror literature shopping spree (you lucky dog you)!

Treat Me Nice

Posted in Books, General, News, Rants on January 11, 2012 by Michael Louis Calvillo

Oh, Treatment, how I loathe thee. Yes, I know, you are only doing your job. And at the heart of the matter, the reason I keep coming back for more, is because you are trying to save my life. I appreciate it. I really do. But oh, why must you be sooo damn tough? Why must you sap my energy and twist my bones?

I failed to show up yesterday (here on the blog that is) because I was simply too tired to type. After a full day of teaching hyperactive monkeys the fascinating intricacies of the Modern Language Association, I went to good old Hope for a blast of radiation. Today, I woke up and did it again. Tomorrow, I’ll be back at it. I have ten back-to-back treatments with the freaky, interstellar, radiation machine (it’s very Marvin the Martian-ish). The rays have to be administered daily and we live about an hour away from the facility, so, well, the next two weeks pretty much suck.

(Prepare yourself, humanoid! Feel the wrathful radiation of my illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator!)

You see, I’m tired, Loyal Reader. My propulsive writing schedule / crazy drive has dwindled some. I used to write in superhuman bursts – it was common to turn out about 5000 words a day (on a work day even!).  I got so much done over the past few years that I have a number of projects simply waiting in the wings. These novels and novellas should sustain me for the next three or four years (I have two novels and two novellas releasing in 2012 – if and when I sell these other works, I’ll fill out my future…). In the meantime, at my slower pace, I’ll steadily add to the pool while working the business angle promoting my brand of screwed up fiction.

But man, it’s killing me. I just wanna chill and watch TV. I just wanna power down. I joked with my wife about retiring the other day. We laughed about it, but there’s some truth in the absurdity (retiring at 37 after releasing three novels, a short story collection, and two novellas, seems pretty absurd to me – sheesh, my career has only just begun). Still, sometimes I don’t want to write. Sometimes I want to give up the keys and keep it all inside.

It’s impossible though. It really is. I spent so many years trying to kick that door in, there’s no way I’ll ever take it for granted and let it all go. It’s insanely hard to get published. Money is tight. Folks don’t invest in you unless you prove yourself talented enough to warrant the investment. It’s a huge honor to have a number of go-to publishers willing to give your work preferential treatment. The army of struggling authors trying to sell their work know what I’m talking about. Once that door opens and you develop a working relationship with a publisher, you put your best brain forward, and you write, and you keep your name alive, or, you lose your place to the next eager novelist trying to come up. Legacies are at stake here. Squandering opportunity is unthinkable.

So I type. And I try to endear you. And I work to move you. And hopefully you take to my writing, and our brains commune, and you add my work to your library to be passed on and on into infinity.

I especially dig the line, “I miss the comfort in being sad.” It matches my bratty mood.

Holiday PSA

If you are wondering where I’ve been, I’ve been doing the SKYRIM thing. That, and sleeping and watching TV. Vacation is a wonderful thing.

Presently, my wife is wrapping presents and I’m watching TMZ.

Why would I want to waste the moment blogging?

Merry almost Christmas, Loyal Reader…

Webb Immortal

Posted in Books, General, News, Raves on December 14, 2011 by Michael Louis Calvillo

Fans are folks who get what I do with my writing. They enjoy my narrative abilities. It’s awesome to meet them. It’s even more awesome to send them free books.

Back in August, I ran a Free Book contest. All you had to do was review one of my works and post it anywhere you’d like on the big old Internet. Winner Jamey Webb was nice enough to review several of my works on a variety of sites. I sent over a pair of limited edition hardcovers and some swag. I even have evidence of their arrival…

(The SuperCool Jamey Webb)

Thanks, Jamey!

Enjoy the books, spread the word (if you are reading this – you too), party on.

I’ll run another contest sometime next year.

Until then, let’s wave our books in the air and rock out!

The Fertile Sands Of Imagination (An Evil Teaser)

Posted in Books, News on December 5, 2011 by Michael Louis Calvillo

I love it when I get a new idea. I got one this afternoon. That little light bulb went off and poof! There’s a whole idea just begging to be written out. It’s not fully cooked. I haven’t even told my wife (who is going to ask me about it as soon as she’s done reading this!). But a lot of it is ready and waiting. I even got a fancy name that sums the whole thing up. It’s catchy. And it creates a whole, new world with a few striking words. I can’t spell it out just yet, but I am sure it’s a keeper. I wrote a few paragraphs and it’s feeling good.

(Here I go, here I go, here I go again...)

Sometimes I get so burnt out I can’t even get my brains to hold my eyelids up. Other times, I get so charged, I can’t help but to stare wide-eyed at overflowing capability.

A little suspense then. The Idea will manifest soon. Once I work out a few kinks I’ll spill.

Okay, back to dreaming…

This is your id. You know you dream this too…

Domination #1 – Enticement

Posted in Books, General, News on November 21, 2011 by Michael Louis Calvillo

I’m losing track. There might not be 365 posts in 365 days. I missed a few days and still owed one and…

Forget it. I’ll just keep writing and find a way to deliver.

(Makes sense to me)

There’s been lots of stuff to write about, I’ve just been lazy. I went in to Vacation Mode at exactly 2:31PM, on Friday afernoon. For the next week we can stay up late, and wake up late, and what we want when we want. I’ll tell you what (go , Hank Hill!), that’s all our country needs. We all get up later, and we all go to bed later, and we take our time in starting the day, and then unwinding at night, and poof! Just like that, everybody is well rested and happy.

Nice long lunch breaks help. Work a few hours, take a few hours off, then you get in a few more hours before cutting out.

Anyways.

I all ready posted the good news on FB, but I suppose it belongs here for posterity’s sake, huh?

I sold a book to DARKFUSE, a new imprint of Delirium. In addition to running a novella and novel line up,DARKFUSE also serves as a storefront for indie horror. DARKFUSE / Delirium is putting out books by the brightest in the business, giving good homes to good, freaky books. They’re pretty great.

(All indie horror, all the time)

Check out their IN PRODUCTION page, where’ll you’ll see a Cover Coming Soon designation holding a spot in the April 2012 production schedule for my novel LAMBS.

I’m excited. The best thing is, the book is coming out in all formats – hard cover, paperback, and digital, so everyone will have a chance to check it out.

Can’t wait for the cover art.

Winning!

Posted in Books, General, News on November 18, 2011 by Michael Louis Calvillo

I know, that’s an old reference. Do you think it’s been long enough to bring it back around?

In any case, today I sold a book. Cool, huh? That makes for two novels being published in 2012! Both will be hard cover limiteds & trade paperbacks & digital, so we will be doing the mass marketing thing, getting the books out to everywhere and everyone we can. Should be good. Expect some nice promotion in the near future.

(Killer)

So, the books?

Okay. I’ve got BIRDBOX, a book in which the Garcia children inadvertently free an ancient witch whose soul has been embedded into the DNA of every bird on earth. These birds have to join with the poor soul the witch infects so that the sinister woman can manifest and take over the world. Can the kids band together and fight the evil? Not likely, you see, though they are charming and sweet, Children are pretty dumb. They make lots of grave mistakes. Fun and gruesome! (We already have a cover for this one – once Bad Moon edits, then lays it out, we’re set, but their schedule is pretty backed up).

Next up is LAMBS. This one is about some seriously screwed up teenagers. Arthur sees dead people, and phantom wounds, and may or may not be responsible for spectral murders every four years of his sixteen years on the planet. His roommate at the grouphome (after his parents died he fell into the system), Conor is crack baby with an interest in arson. Melanie is an all-American Satanist. Their lives collide in interesting, often bloody ways. It’s a bleak one, but I had some fun with making Satanists over into Norman Rockwell golly-gee-whiz types. It’s strange. And kinda cool.

So then, good news on the career front. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy them as much as I like writing them.

Covers and more news coming soon.

Backward Adaptation

Posted in Books, Movies, News on October 25, 2011 by Michael Louis Calvillo

So, my latest writing project is a little goofy. It’s an adaptation of a screenplay I wrote for a movie currently in production. I guess, technically, it’s a novelization of a film, but since I’m writing both the source and the adapted work, the word novelization doesn’t really feel like the right word.

(These dudes are making the movie I wrote, soon to be a novel I wrote, right now!!!)

I always think of a novelization as a quick knock-off churned out by writers to make a quick buck. They go light on literary insight and generally stick to the script. Hired hands are not tied to the project in the same way a writer is devoted to his of her own material. I suppose that’s not really fair. There are some splendid novelizations out there. If somebody hired me to do one, I’d throw all I have into it. I’d try to find a way to connect to the material and give it my all. There’s no reason to think another writer wouldn’t feel the same. Maybe I need to read more novelizations.

I like to teach WEST SIDE STORY after finishing up Romeo & Juliet and we read from a novelization by this guy named Irving Shulman (he has a few original novels under his belt too). He does a nice job turning a musical into a straight-up gang drama, throwing in lots of flair, characterizing the mean streets, giving the characters little nuances not seen in the original source material.

(Like the play? Read the novelization. There’s no singing or dancing, but it’s still good!)

In my particular case, I plan on spicing things up. The movie should be cool (I like how the screenplay came out), but the book? Oh, the book will be grand. I’m gonna build upon everything I’ve all ready developed and make it as lyrically arresting as I possibly can. It’ll be a worthy companion to the film. It’ll be hard for me to pick a favorite, but as a general rule of thumb, the book is always better… With the folks working on ATHENA (the name of the book and film), I’ve got my work cut out for me though. They’re doing some wonderful things that may be hard to top!

Always Up for A Nice Write Up!

Posted in Books, News, Raves on October 25, 2011 by Michael Louis Calvillo

Hey there, Loyal Reader. Sorry I missed you yesterday. Felt too tired to get on the blog, but never fear, I got two short ones for you today…

First up, a little validation. A new DEATH & DESIRE IN THE AGE OF WOMEN review turned up on Terrorflicks.com, an all-purpose horror site. It’s very nice. I think there are a few copies floating around out there (follow the above link if interested). Click the book cover below and check out the write-up, then come back and read blog post #II.

(Woot! There it is!)
